Kitchener Council to Hear from Residents about Development

Over the last decade many developments in the Downtown Kitchener area have been approved, but not without considerable debate.

Some developments have even proceeded without needing council approval or amendments to the official plan and zoning by-laws. Others seem to contravene the Official Plan and Urban Design Guidelines to the detriment of making Kitchener a livable, pedestrian friendly and good place to live.
Several development proposals have proceeded despite the many objections of the residents who live in the downtown areas, arguing that planning documents are not being followed.

A coalition of groups in the Victoria Park area has asked to start a dialogue with the City Council, starting with the Council meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, March 20th.

(The agenda for this meeting has not yet been published on the city’s website, so we do not know when the presentation will actually occur. These details will be available at the following webpage on Friday March 17: Current agendas and reports - City of Kitchener)

The title for this presentation is “Why Predictable Development Is Important: Keeping Faith With The Community."

The coalition is asking people who share their concerns to attend the March 20th meeting. Please support this initiative by being physically present at the council meeting.

The coalition consists of groups which were active in raising concerns about the development proposed for the corner of Victoria and Park. Council declined to approve that proposal. The developer has appealed that decision at the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) and that appeal process is underway.

The coalition would like to have as many people present as possible so that Council understands the concerns of residents on how they would like to see the City of Kitchener in the future.
